Which brush should you choose?

Toothbrushes are found in many shapes and sizes.  Family Dentistry would like to share the options to consider when choosing a toothbrush that is best for you or your family member.  Most dental professionals recommend a soft bristle brush to remove debris and plaque from your teeth.  Small headed brushes are easier to reach the “harder to reach” areas including those back teeth.  Thy type of handle which may be a flexible neck or non-slip, the shape of the head may be rectangular or pointed, and the bristles may be flat or rippled can be chosen to ones comfort level when brushing.  A powered toothbrush is also a wonderful option because for those who have difficulty brushing can have an effective cleaning with the powered toothbrush.  Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart recommend changing your toothbrush whenever the bristles begin to fray or every 3 months.  Also, remember to change your toothbrush if you have been sick with a cold or flu, this will help to eliminate the chance of a reinfection.  For further information on choosing a toothbrush, check out this article.   Family Dentistry has a Goal to provide Great Dental Care of a Lifetime but having the patients have the appropriate toothbrush will assist in achieving this goal.
