Dry Mouth has many symptoms that can cause problems with the health of your mouth. Family Dentistry would like to recommend treatment options that can help promote a healthier mouth.  A number of clinical trials are being investigated on drugs that are called radioprotectors, which are given at the time of radiation therapy to prevent dry mouth.  Dry mouth has many causes as we have reviewed in the last blog that this medication could help inhibit the symptoms.  Other recommended options for Dry Mouth to prevent cavities and gum disease include 1.Clean the mouth 4 times a day, after each meal and before bedtime.  2.Rinse mouth immediately after food. 3. Brush the teeth with fluoride toothpaste.  4. Sip water frequently. 5.  Rinse the mouth with a salt and baking soda solution,  4 to 6 times a day(1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 8 oz of water) 6. Avoid food and drinks with high sugar. 7.  Avoid mouthwashes that contain alchohol.  8.  Use moisturizer on the lips.  9. Use saliva substitutes, oral medications, or saliva sprays  recommended by Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart.  10.  Apply a prescription-strength fluoride gel daily at bedtime to clean teeth.   These are treatment options that will help increase the comfort for the patient with the dry mouth and decrease the chance for oral lestions and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.  Please contact Family Dentistry to help with your needs for dry mouth.  Our goal is to provide a Lifetime of Great Dental Care!
