The Link Between Mental Health and Teeth!

Posted .

Family Dentistry always advocates for great dental health for your teeth!   Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, Hart, and Fickas also promote overall health including mental health!  Many research studies have shown a link between tooth loss and mental health problems.  These mental health problems include depression and anxiety.  Your dental hygiene can impact your overall health.  Those who have periodontal disease have a great chance of getting a cardiovascular disease which can also decrease blood flow to the brain.  A cause of dementia is poor oral health-so brushing and flossing every day is vital.  Researchers have found that women who did not brush their teeth daily were 65% more likely to develop dementia.  Men were 22% more likely to develop dementia if they did not brush daily.  A bacterium that is present in the mouth of those with poor dental hygiene is porphyromonas gingivalis.  This infection can get in the bloodstream and can enter into the brain and cause memory loss.  Keeping your mouth and teeth clean can prevent this.  Family Dentistry encourages proper dental hygiene for not only the health of your teeth but your mental health as well.
