Dr. David Ogle was quoted in the article “Jaw Breaker What really causes TMJ-and how to fix it” written by Ashley Meijer in the July/August 2012 Evansville Living Magazine. As the causes were stated in the last post, the treatment that Dr. Ogle recommends for the TMJ disorder includes fitting his patient with an acrylic splint that fits over the upper and lower teeth. By wearing this splint, the muscles will relax and will prevent the teeth from grinding. Typically, Dr. Ogle states that by wearing this splint, the patient can be relieved of this pain that is caused by the TMJ disorder ususally in about 2 weeks. If the splint therapy does not eliminate the pain, a chiropracter or a physical therapist would be recommended to evaluate the patients muscles,  joints, and possibly trigger points. Also, relaxation methods could be utilized to decrease the tension in this joint. A specialist is rarely recommended and surgery is an option that should be considered with caution because of many potential complications. If you or anyone in your family suffers from this TMJ disorder, remember to contact Family Dentistry to assist you in relieving this discomort.
