Is Chewing ICE Harmful to Your Teeth? Part 2 of 2

Posted .

Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart would like to remind you the dangers of chewing ice.  The teeth are naturally kept at body temperature.  Ice changes this temperature and can cause the enamel on the teeth to expand rapidly.  If you have fillings in your teeth,  this change in temperature from chewing ice  can also cause the expansion of these fillings which could result in extra stress on these teeth.  This extra stress may cause a fracture in the tooth.  These fractures may be very small but can make your teeth very sensitive to cold or hot temperatures from food, drink, or just breathing in cold air.   If you are having sensitivity to any of your teeth, please see your dentist.  They can detect whether a fracture is present in your tooth and will recommend the best treatment plan to save your tooth.  This treatment plan may include a filling,  a crown, or a restorative procedure to allow for the tooth to be functional again.   Please contact Family Dentistry at 812-853-3313 to protect your teeth from fractures or tooth loss.
