How to Keep Your Smile Safe When You Are Sick

Posted .

Did you know that when you have a cold or the flu, it is just as important to take care of your dental health as well as your body during this time?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the flu virus can survive on moist surfaces for 72 hours, so never share your toothbrush, but especially when you are sick. Be sure to keep brushing and flossing even when you are sick. However, you don’t have to replace your toothbrush afterward unless it is 3-4 months old, or you simply want a fresh start.

If you are treating a cough with cough drops, avoid those that have fructose or corn syrup in them. This can invite cavities as you suck on the cough drops over time. Cavity-causing bacteria thrive on sugar and secrete harmful acids which can lead to cavities.

If your stomach flu results in vomiting, don’t brush your teeth right away, because the stomach acids coat the enamel. It is better to rinse well with water or use a diluted oral rinse. You can also neutralize the acids by mixing together water and 1 tsp. of baking soda and rinsing. Then wait 30 minutes before brushing.

Staying well hydrated when you are sick is also essential. Whether you are incurring dry mouth from the medicines you are taking, like antihistamines or decongestants, you will want to drink fluids and suck on sugar-free cough drops or throat lozenges.

When hydrating, the best fluid is water when it comes to your teeth. Electrolytes in sports drinks may be beneficial, but unless they are sugar-free, you are risking cavities. The same goes for teas with sugar or lemon. Drink them sparingly after you are well.
