How Do You Know If You Have Gum Disease?

Posted .

In America, 75% of individuals over the age of 35 have gum disease.  Family Dentistry would like to convey the importance of that statistic.  Gum disease is a huge concern for many people and our dentists would like to educate all on what to be aware of with gum disease.  Classic signs of gum disease, which is also called gingivitis, includes red, swollen, and tender gums.  The gums may bleed during brushing.  At first, gingivitis may not be painful so it may not be detected for a longer period of time unless detected by a dentist or hygienist.  When the gingivitis becomes worse or more of an advanced stage, it is then called periodontitis.  This is when the gums have ulcerations and the gums are pulling away from the teeth.  This can cause permanent teeth to become loose or separate.  This may affect your bite, may change the way a denture fits in the mouth,  can create a constant bad breath, and risk losing the teeth.  Please contact Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, Hart, or Fickas to evaluate your teeth and gums if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease.  For further information please check out this website on gum disease as well.  Stay tuned to our blog for the methods in preventing gum disease.  Family Dentistry’s goal is to educate and provide great dental care for a lifetime for our patients.
