Cavities have always been a part of our lives but in the past few decades, cavities have decreased. The main reason for this decrease is Fluoride. Fluoride is natures cavity fighter as stated in this article from the Journal of the American Dental Association. Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in water sources, even the ocean. An amazing fact that has been found in the research is that fluoride not only reduces cavities but it helps repair the teeth before cavities can develop.  Fluoride can be received in two ways: topical and systemic. Topical includes the fluoride given in the dental office as shown in the picture, in mouthwash, or in toothpaste. Systemic fluorides are those that are taken into the body. This can be from fluoridated water or supplements such as tablets, drops, or lozenges that contain fluoride. The most effective method to reduce tooth decay is with receiving fluoride topically and systemically. Community water fluoridation is a wonderul way to obtain fluoride for children and adults. Not all communities offer fluoride in their water and so dietary fluoride supplements must be prescribed by the dentist. The amount of fluoride must be monitored for children six and under because an overage of fluoride could result in permanent discoloration of the developing unerupted permanent teeth.   Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart can assist in prescribing the amount of fluoride and will provide in the treatment plan to promote the health of you and your family’s teeth. Please contact Family Dentistry if you have any questions regarding the importance of fluoride and continue to review our upcoming blog on who needs fluoride.
