Flossing is Key to Proper Dental Health!

Posted .

Flossing is an essential part of tooth-cleaning that removes plaque from between teeth and at the gumline.  This is where peridontal disease often begins.  If flossing is difficult, be sure to ask your dental hygienist about the variety of dental floss holders that are available to assist you in holding the floss.  Not everyone has the ability to hold the floss with their fingers to floss effectively.  To floss, wind approximately 18 inches of floss around the middle finger of each hand with the majority of floss on one side.  Then pinch the floss between the thumb and index finger.  This should be approx

imately 1-2 inches. As the floss should be taut, use the thumbs to direct the floss between the upper teeth.  As you floss between each tooth continue to roll the floss to the side with a little floss as to only use clean floss between the teeth.  Once the upper teeth are completed, move the floss to the lower teeth.  Remember to gently guide the floss using a back-n-forth motion.  Do not snap or be forceful with the floss between your teeth.  Guide the floss with the contours of your teeth.  Proper flossing will assist in preventing decay and plaque build- up between the teeth and promote healthier gums.
