Dental Emergency Room Visits

Posted .

According to the USA Today article, many more patients are seeking help in the Emergency Room(ER) for dental related problems. Family Dentistry with Dr. Schmitz, Dr. Fickas , Dr. Fabiano and Dr. Biggerstaff would like to promote the importance of routine dental care to prevent the dental related emergency visits.  The American Dental Association shows dental ER visits doubled from 1.1 million in 2000 to 2.2 million in 2012.  Many dentists along with ADA officials report the problem continues to increase despite health reform as this article is dated June 2015.  What starts as a toothache that is not taken care of by a dentist when it is a smaller problem becomes a huge problem with a tooth infection that leads to hospitalization and possibly death.  The underlying issue is so many adults put off until the very end because they do not have dental coverage and do not have money to be preventative with dental care.  The government with insurance companies are attempting to create solutions to increase coverage for the poor with state funded Medicaid programs to promote patients being seen in a dental office and not in the ER.  The dental office is much less expensive to care for the patients than the emergency room.     Preventative care in the dental office is cost effective for all patients no matter their financial situation to eliminate the huge expense of not having dental care and then when a dental issue has become a big problem that can create more health issues as well as a huge expense.   Family Dentistry in Newburgh, Indiana wants to promote preventative care for all ages and to reduce the amount of dental visits to the emergency room.  Call us at 812-853-3313 with your dental concerns.
