Family Dentistry would like to share foods that most would not realize the concern for your teeth! Cavities are formed by the bacteria in the mouth that consumes sugar and creates acid that creates the cavities.  Crackers, white bread, or buns are carbohydrates that are molecules consisting of  long chain of sugars when they break down in the mouth.   These carbohydrates will stick to the teeth and create cavities. Dried fruit is better than eating candy however, the dried fruit is very concentrated sugar and sticks to the teeth just as candy would. Anything sticky, gummy, or sweet that can adhere to the teeth can create cavities. Ketchup contains a lot of sugar and can increase the sugar in the mouth. Most are not aware of the sugar content in condiments. Soft drinks are extremely harmful for the teeth because of their acidic nature and the high concentration of sugar. Drinking a soft drink is like receiving a double punch to the teeth.  As we all know that we should have our vitamins in our daily diet, children’s chewable vitamins contain acid as well as sugar and stick to the teeth when they are chewed. These vitamins need to be ingested and not left on the teeth to create harm to the teeth. Last but not least, nuts, ice cubes, and popcorn kernels can create a crack in a tooth when biting on them. This crack in the tooth can affect the enamel of the tooth and can receive further breakdown from cavities and more stress to the tooth. Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, Hart, and Fickas want to advise all of being cautious if eating these foods. Be mindful to not allow the food to stay on the teeth and to practice proper rinsing, brushing, and flossing on a routine daily basis.
