As stated in our last blog, Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart check for Oral Cancer during every evaluation of the mouth and throat. Oral cancer continues to affect many lives including young and old. The key to detecting oral cancer is regularly scheduled dental appointments so that the dentist can detect any signs of mouth or throat cancer. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, visiting your dentist should also be done prior to starting any chemotherapy that may be prescribed by another physician for the treatment of cancer whether it be for oral cancer or any other type of cancer. Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, or Hart can evaluate the status of your oral health before any chemotherapy treatments are initiated. To keep your mouth and throat in the healthiest condition and to prevent other problems: 1. Check your mouth everyday for sores or any changes. 2. Keep your mouth moist by drinking alot of water. 3. Chew sugarless gum. 4. Have ice or sugarfree candy to keep your mouth moist. 5. Ask the dentist regarding a saliva substitute. Keeping your teeth clean especially during these treatments to prevent further decay or teeth problems:  1.   Use an extra soft toothbrush for the teeth, gums, and tongue after each meal. 2. Use fluoride toothpaste to give the teeth extra protection. 3. Have a fluoride treatment done at the dental office. 4. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol. 5. Gums can be very sensitive however floss each day being careful to not cause bleeding. 5. If dentures are not fitting appropriately, consult with the dentist for further options needed.  Family Dentistry is concerned for the health of all their patients and wants to provide a lifetime of Great dental care for the whole family. Please contact us so that we can help you and your family be healthy by scheduling your dental appointments on a regular basis.
