Mouth Cancer Cases Have Increased!

Posted .

According to national news, oral cancer is on the rise.  The article published in March 2012 on the Daily Mail Reporter website reports that oral cancer has risen to over 6000 cases in a year.  For the first time, experts share that 2/3 of these cases are found in men.  This increase is attributed to the rising rates of the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.  Surveys have shown that more men drink heavily and smoke which are risk factors to oral cancer as well.  The HPV-16, which is one type of the HPV,  is known to cause cell changes which can develop into oral cancer, commonly at the base of the tongue, and tonsil area.  Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart want to convey that if oral cancer is detected early, there is a better chance of successful treatment.  So Please watch out for the signs of oral cancer.  These could be mouth ulcers that do not heal, any red or white patches in mouth that do not disappear, or any lumps or thickening of the mouth, lips, or throat.  If you are concerned with any of these signs, please contact Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, or Hart.  Dentists are very important in detecting oral cancer and assisting patients in the proper health of their mouth.  Remember to schedule you and your family for their dental examinations at least every 6 months to maintain optimal health for your teeth and mouth, as well as your  overall  body health.
