Chewing on ice can be very harmful to your teeth. Teeth are naturally suppose to be room temperature and when you place something cold on them the natural composition is changed. The habit of biting and chewing on hard ice is a very common habit. When biting on this hard ice, a tremendous amount of bite stress will be placed on these teeth. Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart would like to remind you of the history of icebergs.  As we know from the study of geology, icebergs once existed in North America and created the Great Lakes.  So we understand that it was ice that broke down rock and reduced mountains to rubble.  Even though we are not talking about an iceberg, ice in your mouth being chewed by your teeth can create the same destruction to your teeth especially the enamel on your teeth. Your teeth may also become very sensitive or painful from this habit. If you are having any sensitivity or pain, please contact us at 853-3313 to evaluate this issue. Family Dentistry has a goal to provide you and your family with a Lifetime of Great Dental Care!!
