Baby teeth are only temporary, however, they are susceptible to tooth decay and can lead to pain and discomfort. This is often referred to as “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.”  According to the American Dental Association, parents should be aware of reminders to protect their babies teeth.
- Do not share cups or utensils with your children. Bacteria can be passed on to others.
- Before the baby’s teeth come in, clean gums with a damp cloth.
- When the teeth do come in, use a small child size toothbrush and water. Do not use Fluoride toothpaste until age 2 or older.
- When using toothpaste for child, only use about a pea size amount of toothpaste.
- Always watch your child until they are 6 or 7 and will not swallow the toothpaste.
- Do not send your child to bed with a bottle.
- A child’s pacifier should always be clean and not covered with honey or sugar.
- Encourage your child to drink from a cup by age one and eliminate any bottle drinking.
- Visit Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart and have your child checked by age 2 to promote healthy habits for their teeth.
