Chewing Gum and Oral Health

Posted .

Did you know that sugarless gum can help prevent cavities? Studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for at least 20 minutes after your meal can help prevent cavities. But how is this possible? The key is a very simple trick your body has for protecting your mouth and teeth: increased saliva production.

First things first: chewing regular gum can also promote saliva, but the sugars in the gum feed the bacteria the saliva is trying to fight, negating the benefits of chewing gum. Look for gum with the ADA Seal of Approval to ensure you are getting a product that does what it says it will do–help protect your smile!

By chewing sugarless gum, your mouth will create excess saliva. Saliva, not the gum itself, is what actively fights cavities. Saliva can not only wash away food particles and harmful bacteria that cause plaque buildup, but it can also neutralize the acids responsible for tooth decay.
Saliva also provides fortifying nutrients and disease-fighting substances throughout your mouth.

Chewing gum has other positive health effects. Sugarless gum can help protect your teeth from acids caused by heartburn, and can even prevent heartburn from occurring.

Never let chewing gum act as a substitute for regular brushing and flossing. Brush for 2 minutes, twice a day, and floss once a day for 2-3 minutes. Additionally, make sure to eat well-balanced meals and drink plenty of water! These practices together can help prevent cavities.
