Preventing Gum Disease

Posted .

Your gums are as vital to a beautiful, healthy smile as are your teeth. Tooth decay is only one pitfall of poor oral care, gum disease is another. So what is gum disease, and how can you make sure to avoid it?

Gingivitis is what happens when the bacteria in your mouth builds up into plaque and tartar to inflame your gum tissue. It begins with bacteria from food particles not cleared away. This builds into a sticky film (plaque) which over time, hardens into tartar. While you can remove bacteria and plaque by brushing and flossing daily your dentist will need to remove tartar during your scheduled tooth cleaning.

Gingivitis left untreated turns into periodontitis. Periodontitis develops when tartar near the gum line makes the gums recede around the teeth, which exposes parts of your teeth and makes them prone to infection. Eventually this results in the erosion of the jaw bone which supports your teeth. If you see any of the following you may need to see your dentist:

— If your gums consistently bleed during your brushing and flossing routine
— If your gums turn red, are swollen, and tender
— If your gums are pulling away from your teeth
— If you have bad breath that never goes away
— If your teeth are loose

If you want to do your part in preventing gum disease, begin with brushing and flossing twice daily. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste to protect your tooth enamel. Floss carefully and thoroughly near the gum line and don’t neglect this aspect of your daily oral care. Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash to kill germs. And finally, see your dentist twice a year to remove tartar and answer any questions you may have.
