As we had shared in our Part 1 of 2 blog, millions of Americans have diabetes. Family Dentistry has a goal for all those with pre-diabetes or diabetes to keep smiling. Diabetes can often cause heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and gum disease.  Gum disease can become very serious if you have diabetes. This gum disease can cause tooth loss because of bacterial infections that can occur at a higher risk with diabetes. Also this gum disease can affect the blood glucose level which than further progresses the diabetes disease.  Prevention is the key to keep from the diabetes disease to progress.  Prevention includes the routine dental visits including the oral examination by the dentist, the hygienist treating the teeth, with proper x-rays, regular brushing, flossing, and good nutrition.  Proper oral health is the best method to prevent gum disease and to control your diabetes. Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, Hart, and Fickas want to keep all our patients with diabetes smiling!
