Foods That Promote Healthy Teeth!

Posted .

Family Dentistry encourages eating that will promote the health of our teeth.  What food should we enjoy that will help our teeth?  Fruits and vegetables contain many nutrients that promote the growth and development of our teeth and bodies.  Vitamin C is a very important nutrient that will do just that.  Apples, kiwis, grapes, oranges, lemons, and tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C.  Fruits are a vital part of a healthy diet,  however too much citrus fruits can be hazardous with excessive ingestion of the acidic fruits.     Low-fat cheeses and yogurts are another food group that is vital in a healthy diet.  Cheeses and yogurts contain calcium and phosphorus that is great for strengthening bones and tooth enamel.  Vitamin A is also a wonderful nutrient to strengthen and harden tooth enamel.  Foods rich in Vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.  Onions, especially eating raw onions,  can kill mouth bacteria which can decrease the chance of decay in the teeth and allow the teeth to be stronger.  Celery is another great vegetable that promotes the creation of saliva with all the crunching and chewing.  This extra saliva allows for extra cleaning of the teeth and removing bacteria with the increase of chewing and swallowing.    Drinking green tea can promote the health of our teeth by fighting plaque with all the extra antioxidants.  And drinking a lot of water promotes the health of our teeth by washing away food particles as well as keeping our body hydrated.  Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, Hart, and Fickas promote healthy teeth for a lifetime and that includes enjoying a healthy diet to achieve that goal.
