Oral cancer according to the National Cancer Institute estimated that 40,000 people were diagnosed with mouth and throat cancer in 2012.   Oral cancer is definitely a concern for the health of all patients and continues to grow each year.  Family Dentistry is aware of the importance of raising awareness for oral cancer so that more people can prevent cancer affecting their lives.  Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart perform oral cancer screenings during each evaluation of the oral cavity.  The oral cavity includes your lips, cheek lining, gums, the tongue, the roof and the floor of the mouth, your throat, as well as the location where the tongue attaches to the floor of the mouth.  By visiting your dentist regularly, you can improve your chances of detecting suspicious changes in your oral cavity.   When the dentists can find symptoms early in the mouth, the chances of treating the cancer is improved with much easier and better results.  Symptoms of mouth or throat cancer can include sores that bleed easily and do not heal.  Thick, hard spots or lumps or rough, crusty areas in the mouth should be evaluated by the dentist.  Any numbness, pain, tenderness, or the teeth feeling differently should be shared with the dentist. Problems with chewing, swallowing, speaking, moving the tongue, or moving the jaw are signs that the dentist will want to be informed of the specifics of these symptoms. Remember the key to preventing oral cancer is early detection with attending your regularly scheduled Family Dentistry dental appointments.
