Understanding Dental X-Rays (Part 2 of 2)

Posted .

Family Dentistry would like to continue to share about dental x-rays and the small amount of radiation which is approximately 2-3 mrem that is received when having a dental x-ray.  Please refer to the previous blog which is Part 1 of 2 to review the radiation explanation.  According to the National Council on Radiation Protection(NCRP), the average American receives about 360 mrem every year from their normal activites of daily living.  These mrem are received from outer space, radioactive materials in the food we consume as well as in the earth.   Some other activites that we receive radiation from are the smoke detectors in our house, living in a brick house due to the radioactive material in the bricks, reading a book because of the radioactive wood particles in the pages, flying on an airplane, or from other human beings because we contain radioactive materials.    Of course to live life to the fullest, you receive radiation in your body.  The benefit from having dental x-rays to make certain that your teeth and mouth are healthy definitely outweigh the minimal amount of radiation that you will receive.   Drs. Ogle, Schmitz, and Hart want to guide you to take the healthy route for your teeth, mouth, and body.  Dental x-rays are necessary in providing Great Dental Care for a Lifetime for you and your family!
