5 Tips to Wearing Dentures

Posted .

If you’re a new denture wearer, we have some helpful tips for you! We understand that dentures can be inconvenient and irritating at times, but there are some things you can do to make the experience more successful and convenient, like:

1. Eat the right foods: When you first begin using dentures, eating may be a little difficult, which is why we recommend eating the right foods and taking small, manageable bites. The best foods to eat with dentures are fish, cooked veggies, eggs, ice cream, and yogurt. Please do not eat chewy or sticky products, like caramel, taffy, or chewy meats. Once time passes and you become more comfortable with the appliance, you are more than welcome to start adding more chewy and firm foods to your diet.

2. Use adhesives: Adhesives help keep your denture in place, which will make the appliance feel more secure and stable. When using the adhesive, follow the instructions carefully and only use a small amount. Please do not use this product to fix old or poorly fitted dentures.

3. Speak out loud: Speaking out loud and slowly will help your tongue become more familiar with the appliance. You can speak out loud in front of a mirror or you can read a book out loud to do the trick.

4. Bite down and swallow before speaking: If your dentures are moving around when you laugh, smile, or talk, gently bite down on the appliance and swallow. This will put the denture in its proper position.

5. Adjust the appliance: Your oral cavity will slowly change over time, which will change the fit of the denture. When this happens, you will need to visit your dentist to adjust your denture. This will help it fit perfectly again. Please do not try to adjust the denture yourself.
